A fascinating story of growing up transgendered
Both Sides Now
by Dhillon Khosla Tarcher-Penguin, $26.95
Reviewed by Terri Schlichenmeyer
When a baby is born, it's usually the first question that is asked of the doctor as the child emerges: Is it a boy or a girl?
What if the answer is "both?"
When Dhillon Khosla was a child, he acted like a boy. He hung out with other boys and he played rough with them. He wanted to be a little boy.
But Khosla was born a little girl and in his new book Both Sides Now, readers will learn about his struggles to find the body he knew he should have had all along.
To see Dhillon Khosla's picture now, or to look at his portrait on the dust jacket of his book, you'd never know that he'd once been given dolls to play with or that those same toys disgusted him. Girls played with dolls, and even though Khosla physically was a little girl back then, he identified more with male children. He says he always wanted to
about gender reassignment surgery that Khosla suddenly realized what that "vague itch" was. It all became clear, as he thought it through. Although Khosla had been born a girl, he had always felt that he was really supposed to be a male. Something-possibly even before he was born-had caused him to be born in the wrong body.
The article mentioned several doctors who performed reassignment surgery, which prompted Khosla to do some research and to search inside himself. Other people's attitudes subtly told Khosla that his de-

take his shirt off to play like the boys did, and boy's toys were more interesting than anything any girl ever had.
During puberty, Khosla tried dating boys, but he eventually gravitated towards the lesbian community. Although he didn't completely feel comfortable calling himself lesbian, he dated women and had several relationships. Strangely, he also realized that straight women were also attracted to him.
It wasn't until one afternoon when a friend handed Khosla a copy of a newspaper article

beautiful, rich voice. It's interesting to see a drag act without lip-synching, and it's quite fulfilling..
And, of course, Ejiofor has the best lines, which one supposes is his right, since he spends much of the movie in six-inch stiletto heels.
For instance, when asked whether he is a "tranny," a drag queen, or what, he replies that he is a drag queen.
"A tranny puts on a frock and looks like Boris Yeltsin in lipstick. A drag queen puts on a frock and looks like Kylie," he purrs, referring to Australian singer and glamour girl Kylie Minogue.
In fact, Ejiofor steals the film completely.

meanor was sometimes more masculine than feminine. Had the signs been there all his life? Finally, in his search for the real person that he was, Khosla also found the courage to take the steps toward becoming the man he always thought he should be.
Both Sides Now is a fascinating book, not just from the standpoint of the male-to-female gender reassignment, but from the viewpoint of someone who has been both female and male. Khosla's emotional roller-coaster is quite interesting; as his journey unfolds, there were shades of both sexes alternating in the feelings that Khosla experienced. The relationship with his mother is also rather amazing. The kinds of conflicts they had were more reminiscent of "typical" mother-daughter fights and less like those of a mother and son.
Be aware that there are descriptions of surgeries that may make some readers cringe and there is blunt talk in this book. If you can handle that, then oh, boy, you'll be riveted by this very unusual memoir. ปี
It is his film from start to finish. Having appeared recently in films running the gamut from the sci-fi Western Serenity to a duo of Spike Lee films (She Hate Me and Inside Man), Ejiofor might just be the hardest-working man in show biz.
Sarah-Jane Potts is a close second. All through the movie, the audience begs for a chance to see the rehired Lauren knock Nicola out, an epic battle equaled only by the struggle between the Jedi and the Sith in the Stars Wars series. Nicola is only slightly less likable than the Emperor . . .
It is interesting how paternal expectations are integral to the film. Charlie had a supportive father who was willing to let him explore his own path, while Simon/Lola's father was a hard man who wanted his son to be hard as well.
Somehow, both boys turned out to be okay.
